Stability & Control DATCOM

Stability and Control DATCOM is a collection, correlation, codification and recording of the best, knowledge, opinion and judgement of aerodynamic stability and control prediction methods (circa 1978). It presents substantiated techniques for use (1) early in the design or concept study phase, (2) to evaluate changes resulting from proposed engineering fixes and (3) as a training aid. It was originally written by McDonnell Douglas for the United States Air Force. AerospacePro offers the written version on CD and the digital version via instant download. The digital version includes a Windows (command line) application, FORTRAN source code, examples and three volumes of documentation.

DATCOM is an invaluable, but not necessarily the easiest too to use. It works great for traditional configurations and should be used early in the design process or for a modification. But, the output has been shown to be good enough to fly sub-scale aerial targets without an wind tunnel testing. Matlab's Aerospace Toolbox allows for the direct import of DATCOM output. There are some other efforts we know of that are using DATCOM in an iterative nature to optimize designs during the early phase of design.
